A Cleaning Product to Feel Good About

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

The kids are back to school, the days are getting shorter and before we know it, we’ll be saying hello to winter. Unarguably, during the wintertime the majority of us tend to spend much more of our time indoors. Yet, aside from making our homes comfortable and cozy for the winter season, it’s also very important to remember that winter’s colds, coughs, and flu germs can spread through a home like wildfire. In terms of keeping germs at bay, it’s safe to say that a clean winter home, makes a happy winter home. However, finding products that make a clean winter home, or just a clean home in general takes much more thought than it has in the past. Sure, we all want our home to be spic and span, but it’s becoming increasingly important to be sure that the home cleaning products we use are safe for people, pets and the environment.

One company in particular that strives to address the consumer conscience about natural cleaning (while keeping consumer style at the forefront) is Method. They take their approach to creating safe, non-toxic cleaning supplies very seriously…from beginning to end.

“Our cleaning formulas contain biodegradable ingredients derived from natural materials like soy, coconut and palm oils. Our packaging is made from the most readily recyclable materials. Our CO2 emissions from employee commute and travel are offset with carbon credits and the energy used in our manufacturing sites and our office is from renewable energy credits.”

Method

Yes, Method’s clever ads are what first caught our eye (see below). And their packaging design is sleek, thoughtful and extremely style conscious. But Method isn’t just another pretty face. Their promise to (honestly) provide a safe, yet effective cleaning product to their consumers seems to be the driving force behind their company. When referring to their line of products, they state:

“Natural” is still not a standardized or regulated term. So while we could, we won’t call a product “natural” if even one of its functional ingredients isn’t natural or naturally derived. When it comes to labeling our products, we hold ourselves to a high standard because we believe that a natural cleaner should actually come from nature.”

So when it comes to buying safe home cleaning products that you want to feel good about, make sure that you’re putting the label through the ringer.

Taking Trend Cues from the Runway

A Look at How Fashion and Home Decor Trends Relate

Runway

The 2009 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week began September 10th and will continue through the 17th of the month. The designs and innovations featured in New York City’s fashion shows this week highlight the upcoming fashion trends consumers should expect to see in spring 2010. These inspirations influence the wardrobes of individuals and surprisingly overlap with the anticipated trends in home design that are mostly replicated through color choice.

According to Kelly Walters from HGTV.com, “Color forecasters are part designer, part sociologist and part predictor. They draw information from the runway, auto manufacturers and the housewares industry; they scour showrooms, trade shows and magazines for trends; they consider what’s happening culturally and how this impacts our national mood. Then they take all of that information and translate it into what colors we’ll be wearing and decorating with in the next year.”

In short, the color selection presented in stores each season, including those of wardrobe and houseware products are strategically chosen per product category and per brand to accommodate the anticipated desires of the consumer. Similar to the way that clothing designers research trends far in advance of their fashion lines, an organization like ColorWorks assists brand managers with choosing colors for products by conducting extensive research in order to integrate the latest and most up-to-date color selection via analytical tools.

Emily Morrow, director of color, style and design at Shaw, Inc. stated, “our economy impacts our color preferences. Since we’re in a recession, a lot of people want to incorporate tasteful shades that don’t seem frivolous.” To Morrow’s point, Fashiontrendsetter.com, an online fashion forecasting and trend reporting website has already noted that shades of gray are predicted to be big in 2010.

Our writers will be reviewing Fashion Week updates and reviews through the month in search for correlations between home and clothing design to best inform readers of what to expect in 2010. We’ll be sure to share updates when appropriate, but we would love to hear your thoughts as well. Are there any home decor trends you are anticipating for 2010?

leo biking nyc Glamorous Green: Eco Friendly Just Like the Celebrities

Everyone knows celebrities live a different lifestyle then the average consumer, but entertainment icons and Average Joes are showing they have a similar conscious when it comes to purchasing sustainable products.

Consumers are constantly looking for a way to close the gap between celebrities and themselves, and with more celebrities taking the plunge into green living by purchasing a sustainable home stocked with organic goods – what better way is there for consumers to bridge the gap than by transforming their own homes into earth-friendly, energy efficient dwellings?

Leonardo DiCaprio committed to efficient living when he bought his New York City home, located in a LEED Gold Rated Building.  This abode is anything but humble yet is highly energy efficient.  Letting consumers know that luxury doesn’t have to be sacrificed when living green.

In this interview, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and her husband discuss their sustainable home – everything from recycled newspaper insulation to solar panels were worked into the eco yet modern design.  They also come clean and discuss the areas of their home and lives that aren’t so green, highlighting another key message for everyday consumers – green efforts aren’t tainted if every single detail is not 100% efficient.

Another green celebrity that is a bit quieter about his eco-efforts is Gerald McCullouchHis story about the renovation process of his New York apartment is a little easier for consumers to relate to then Leo and Julia’s efforts.  Gerald definitely made some big sacrifices and felt the highs and lows of renovation – he went without a shower in his home for eight months!  Gerald’s story shows consumers it’s not always an easy switch, but if you’re dedicated it is worth it.

Still, average consumers don’t have to create an entire new eco-friendly home like these celebrities.  Smaller scale products can be marketed with messaging that gives a high-end, celebrity feel.  How do your products help the average consumer become that much closer to living glamorously?  For the latest celebrity green gossip check out Ecorazzi.

Getting to Know LinkedIn

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

As the old saying goes, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” This may not always be the case, but with LinkedIn who you know can be the key to maximizing your business potential in the home industry. As the world’s largest free professional networking site (over 45 million users), LinkedIn has the ability to connect you to who you know, who they know and who you should know.

Think of LinkedIn as your own virtual Rolodex, but one that makes your professional connections visable, alive and at your fingertips. Every connection has the potential to lead to an even broader network of connections for exchanging information, ideas and opportunities. As an active member of LinkedIn, you can stay informed about trends in the home industry and find the information you need to achieve your business goals – all while increasing your presence online.

As a rule of thumb in social networking, the more active you are the better. Your LinkedIn experience will be as productive as you make it out to be, so following are a few simple tips for taking full advantage of your time spent getting LinkedIn.

  • First things first. Create a LinkedIn profile that is a reflection of your professional and educational history. Did you know that your LinkedIn profile rises to the top of Google search results? Remember that your profile is a means of branding yourself, and the more useful information you provide, your chances of making useful connections improve. By creating an effective profile, LinkedIn gives you control of your image online.
  • Connections, Connections, Connections. We can’t stress enough the importance of connections. Connect with others in the rapidly growing home industry to create your own network of useful resources. Your connections increase your chances of being sought out by others as well. Here’s a great video showing the potential of LinkedIn connections.

  • Get Involved. Once you have a profile and have established connections, get involved in the LinkedIn community as you would in any other community. Join groups, participate in LinkedIn Answers, request and provide recommendations and take advantage of the wide range of applications available to LinkedIn members. These steps can increase your credibility, as well as distinguish yourself from other users.

To close we should also point out the economic and green benefits of LinkedIn as mentioned in Nation’s Building News. “With the cost of networking with other professionals through such traditional methods as printed materials and meetings, an expense that is difficult to justify in today’s market, LinkedIn.com just may be the tool that can help you make the most of your professional networking and grow your business.

Sign up today and join the millions of users already on LinkedIn.

Green Tip of The Month: Buy Used Furniture on Craigslist While Traffic is Down

house Green Tip of The Month: Buy Used Furniture on Craigslist While Traffic is Down

Recycling and reusing isn’t just for aluminum cans and plastic bottles, buying and selling used furniture is a great way to save money and act environmentally responsible. Right now is THE time to go online and begin hunting down that treasure you’ve always wanted.

While most know that Craigslist allows you to easily buy and sell furniture as well as search for local garage sales or post your own, you may not know when the best time to shop really is.  The site experiences the highest traffic in summer months, peaking in July when people are taking advantage of their free time, moving before the school year begins or finishing up their spring cleaning. The traffic dips mid-September and does not climb until late March. This means the best deals to be had and less competition for that piece of furniture you’ve had on your list starts right about now. Volume of posts are still high, but visitors are becoming less frequent.

Another secret to Craigslist shopping is to pick the closest big city to broaden your search. Metropolitan areas more transient than smaller suburban areas, meaning people are more likely to be selling furniture as they move from one city to another. The options are often greater in volume and quality.

Other great places to look for second hand home goods:
•    Ebay
•    Garage/yard sales
•    Estate sales
•    Flea Markets
•    Antique malls

Just remember, one person’s trash is another’s treasure. Have you found other sites that are great for finding second hand furnishings and home décor? Tell us about it.

Microwave a Quick Dinner Solution in Minutes with Less of a Guilty Conscious

Microwave Dinner

The thought of diet of microwave dinners is disturbing to many but the next time you heat up a frozen meal here’s something you can feel good about – you’re using less energy with your microwave then you would be if you prepared a homemade meal with your conventional oven.

We came across this article on Washingtonpost.com and here are some of the energy efficient advantages it lists to using a microwave:

  • Cooking your meal in a microwave is quicker which means you’re cutting down on the amount of time you’re using the actual appliance.
  • Microwaves produce a lot less indoor air pollution then other cooking methods
  • Microwaves don’t give off as much heat that warms your home allowing for energy savings when it comes to the AC and refrigerator
  • If you heat up your food on the plate or in the bowl you plan to eat out of that also creates less dishes which means using less water to clean them

Check out this post for more information on how to be energy efficient in the kitchen. And now that you’re planning to cook with your microwave more often, it might be time to update your china cabinet with some eco-friendly microwave safe options.

It’s been a long Tuesday for the team at HomeIntel and we are thrilled to have an excuse to cook a quick dinner in the microwave tonight. But one thing we are avoiding is prepared dinners with too much packaging – we don’t want to undo the good we did using the microwave by creating too much waste!
