Multi-national Design Trends & America’s Housing Future

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Futurists and trend-watchers agree: Multi-national design trends—coupled with a cautious economy—could greatly influence America’s housing future. Here are a few examples your business should consider to stay ahead of the curve:

  • Asian Design Influence: From the placement of the kitchen stove to the location of bathrooms, the Asian influence—particularly Feng Shui—is appealing to Americans as they look to simplify every aspect of their lives. While some remodelers and designers can easily inject Feng Shui elements via object placement and color choice, demand will soon increase for architects to include them in the blueprint stage.
  • Floorplans Inspired by Hispanic Culture: Open to extended, multigenerational family living under one roof, the Hispanic culture may change how designers and architects approach large single-family homes—like the addition of more privacy and niche areas for different age groups.
  • American Exports: Prefabricated housing in the U.S. has inspired countries around the world to develop similar solutions for rural areas and lower-income communities. Meanwhile, America’s manufactured housing industry is enjoying new popularity. Watch for modular homes that don’t look the part—built with more glass, unique lines and excellent uses of space.

The Importance of Water Conservation

Exploring the Products and Brands That Are Making It Easier for Consumers to Save Water

Practicing energy efficiency is one of the more popular ways that homeowners are diving into the green living landscape, and though conserving water is equally important and easy to do it’s often overlooked.

When it comes to water conservation, the key is to stop wasting.  In their May issue’s “At Home in the Zone” feature, Dwell points out to readers that there is a big difference between the amount of water we actually need to accomplish every day tasks and the amount of water we are using to do those tasks.

The reduce, reuse and recycle principles all apply to our water supply, making conserving it one of the easiest ways to go green.  Here are some products that are currently available to help homeowners cut down on their water use and waste:

  • Low flow shower heads: This review of low flow shower heads outlines multiple options with different features that  cater to everything consumers could possibly look for in a shower head, including modern design, perfect water pressure or a no-frills green performance.
  • Rain collection barrels – With a seemingly endless amount of natural sources of water, it has become harder for society to understand the importance of conserving it. Rain collection barrels help homeowners tap into and use those natural sources in an eco-friendly way.

  • Efficient toilets – Dual flush and high efficiency toilets allow homeowners to flush with a clear conscience, knowing that only the water needed for a successful flush is used every time.

Here are two angles to consider when it comes to marketing products that allow homeowners to better conserve water:

  • Cause-messageJoin the Fight – With their Save Water America campaign and the launch of a Water Saving Contest, Kohler educated and inspired their audience with the right statistics and info and then empowered them by presenting their products as the solution to the problem.
  • Value- messageSave Money – Waterpik, producers of low flow showerheads, lead their communications efforts with the value message.  Sharing with consumers the environmental and economical benefits of water conservation, their website even provides this simple tool for homeowners to calculate how much money they will be saving with the use of their product.

Features like Dwell’s and charts like this one are real eye openers for homeowners and consumers – just like the rest of the green movement, the key is to share the right information with your consumers and provide a product that will help them take that first small step towards living a greener lifestyle.

Note: See Kohler’s Save Water America video below.

New Products Designed to Make Homes Smarter

Smarter Appliances and Technologies Will Reduce Energy Consumption

While the first “smart products” were designed to allow homeowners  to control their lighting with one click of a switch or play music throughout their homes with another touch of a button, today’s smart products are taking on an even greater mission – energy efficiency.

Let’s start by explaining exactly what is meant by “smart.”

  • Smart Home – The early definitions of smart homes included homes with wiring that would allow a homeowner to remotely control or program an array of automated home electronic devices – lighting, home theatre or entertainment systems.  Now, the definition of smart homes is expanding to include chips and meters built into homes and home appliances to give them the ability to communicate both to the homeowner and in some cases to the energy supplier/power company.
  • Smart Meter - A smart meter is a meter installed in a residential home that measures the amount of power (electricity) that is used. In addition, smart meters communicate the amount of power used to the power company and the homeowner.  Some meters located within an appliance or connected to home appliances communicate energy demands from the power company to the appliance to tell the smart appliance to switch to an energy saving or sleep mode if it is a peak time in the day for energy consumption.
  • Smart Grid – A smart grid delivers electricity from suppliers to consumers using digital technology to save energy, reduce cost and increase reliability. According to the Department of Energy, it moves from a centralized, producer-controlled network to a network that is more consumer-interactive.
  • View this video to learn more about the goal of a new Smart Grid

The idea is to allow home appliances and electrical meters to create smarter consumers in order to help curb the nation’s high-energy consumption.  In addition, an upgrade to the current national grid will mean a system that is more efficient, communicative and modern.  GreenTechMedia points out that “Installing meters not only helps utilities monitor energy use and balance supply with demand, but it can also enable their customers to track their consumption at any time online, not just when they receive their energy bills.

Utilities are gradually rolling out consumer-friendly monitoring tools, which can show both the prices of electricity throughout the day and the power usage for each home or business. The goal is to encourage consumers to use less electricity during times of peak demand, when utilities charge more for power.”

Take a look below to find out which companies have introduced or are planning to introduce smart products in the coming months/years.

  • Whirlpool recently announced they will offer a line of appliance compatible with Smart Grid by 2015.
  • GE is busy producing “Energy Management-Enabled Appliances” in conjunction with the Louisville Gas and Electric Co. in Louisville, Ky., including ranges, washers and dryers, dishwashers, and microwaves.  These appliances will feature house smart meters that will know to run during off-peak periods.
  •  Popular Mechanics revealed their five smartest products including a dishwasher that determines not only just the right amount of detergent to use, but also the size and soil level of the load so as to provide the appropriate water amount and temperature; in some cases reducing water consumption and energy.

Manufacturers are working feverously to deliver home appliances that work with utility companies and home dwellers to become a smarter society when it comes to energy use.

Home Intel Editors Share Our Favorite Magazines, Blogs, Websites and TV Shows

At Home Intel headquarters, our GoogleReaders and RSS feeds are always busting at the seams with new posts and updates from our favorite blogs and websites.  There are so many great information sources available for home and green design, we find our lists growing everyday.

We think a good resource should provide a variety of information on different topics – whether it’s the newest trends, appliances and product overviews, DIY project ideas or just some beautiful, inspiring photos.

Here’s a quick core sample of some of our favorite resources.

Magazines:  We know a magazine is great when it makes us read it like a book – cover to cover.  We are just thankful these publications have websites we can check for updates between issues.

Blogs:  What makes a design blog great? At Home Intel, we look for blogs with bite-sized posts that provide the right photos, links and lists.  These give us quick but powerful hits of inspiration that we couldn’t mark “read later” if we tried.

Websites: Our favorite websites have organized layouts.  These sites have enough content to keep us lost for days, but we love them because they are so easy to navigate.

TV:  We tried to narrow it down, but it’s just impossible.  We love everything about HGTV and Planet Green.

What are your favorite resources?  Let us know if you think there’s something we’ve missed!

Larger Fixtures, Energy Efficient Options and Pretty Pendants Top 2009 Lighting Trends

Monday, May 11th, 2009

With so many lighting options today - chandeliers, lamps, recessed cans, pendants and more - decorative lighting is probably one of the most important accessories a homeowner can buy. We should know too since several of the Home Intel editors are remodeling and in the process of shopping for new lighting fixtures to compliment their updated spaces.

Following are three decorative lighting trends we’ve seen in stores and homes over the past few months:

  1. Larger Fixtures - You might be amazed at the size of lighting fixtures today, especially for dining room and foyer/entryway chandeliers. In every store we have visited we noticed an extensive selection of large fixtures like chandeliers. According to HGTV this may be because the average size of the American home has increased over the past few years, which has led manufacturers to create larger home decor accessories and lighting options to better fit the spaces they are designed to fill. People with bigger homes need larger decorative lighting fixtures to fill the space and handle today’s more energy efficient bulb options.
  2. Energy Efficiency – It’s no surprise to see that the interest in energy efficient options is continuing to rise. More and more consumers are looking for efficient options to save both energy and money. Low-voltage bulbs and related lighting fixtures continue to grow in popularity and use, as CFLs and light-emitting diodes (LEDs) offer a higher quality, warmer light than just a short time ago.
  3. Pretty Pendants -  Every store we’ve visited had a surprisingly large selection of pendant lighting. These options are being used over open kitchen counters, breakfast tables, and islands. One store owner told us pendants are extremely hot sellers today. In fact, in addition to seeing these at every store we shopped, we’ve seen these in a number of open houses lately, especially in the more modern, higher-end homes.  “Fixtures like mini pendants are being added as decorative accents and they frequently match or at least compliment the chandelier in the dining room, particularly if the rooms are close together,” says Jeffrey Dross, trends analyst for Kichler Lighting in Cleveland, Ohio

According to the American Lighting Association, it is important to remember that there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to selecting fixture styles. Today, it is considered perfectly acceptable to mix and match opposing styles to create an interesting and surprising complementary look.

Homeowners Forgo Lavish Vacations, Look to Create the Perfect Outdoor Oasis

The perfect summer oasis may be closer than you think. As more people forgo their traditional summer vacations to save money, many homeowners are looking for ways to spruce up their backyards to create a relaxing outdoor paradise where they can escape from their day-to-day troubles, unwind and enjoy the warm summer sun.

After doing a little online research, we have uncovered the top five tips for revitalizing an outdoor space just in time for the summer season. Although most homeowners will not be able to jet off to a tropical destination this year, they will be able to indulge themselves with an updated patio, deck or balcony.

  1. Uncover Your Green Thumb – A garden is the perfect compliment to any outdoor space by providing color, aroma and perhaps the perfect ingredient for your summer fare. By adding bold colors to the garden, homeowners can energize their space and create the perfect tropical look. Looking for additional benefits of having a garden? According to The Reading Eagle, gardens provide great havens from stress and can help consumers significantly cut costs at the grocery store.
  2. Add Some Water – Water features such as bird baths, rain chains, fountains or even ponds are perfect for adding soothing ambiance to any outdoor space. By drowning our everyday noises such as street traffic, water features help ease homeowners into a state of  complete relaxation. For more ideas visit The South County Times.
  3. Update your Patio Furniture – Patio furniture has moved beyond the traditional hard metal chairs with minimal cushions. In fact, today’s outdoor furniture is much more stylish with plush cushions, gorgeous fabrics and deluxe accessories that compliment interior home furnishings. Some of today’s latest trends, especially for trendy city-dwellers, include bar height dining sets and deep seated, ultra comfortable lounge chairs. For those with more space, outdoor day beds are becoming more popular as well.
  4. Light It Up – At any local home improvement retailer homeowners will find a collection of stylish lighting products for fit for outdoor spaces. By incorporating the latest fixtures, including outdoor lamps, lanterns or even chandeliers, any space will take on the perfect atmosphere after the sun goes down. LightPost offers consumers directions for adding just the right amount of light.
  5. Create Some Shade – Whether your patio, deck or lawn revolves around outdoor cooking or relaxing, it’s important to have some shade to increase the use of the space during the hotter days of the season. A large cantilever patio umbrella creates the perfect coverage over a dining set, while a hammock or swinging chair can utilize shade already available in your yard. If you wish to design your own shade, visit Fine Homebuilding for some examples, or Real Outdoor Living for a chance to win $1,000 gift card to the home improvement retailer of your choice in the “Backyard Oasis Giveaway.”
