Refrigeration Innovation: Brands Tackle the Dirty Refrigerator Problem

Monday, March 1st, 2010

When it comes to household chores, we would be willing to bet that most homeowners are not thrilled at the thought of cleaning the refrigerator. After all, its much easier to just close the refrigerator door and forget about the many items that are quickly approaching their expiration dates and the spilled juice and soda cans that have left a sticky mess on the shelves. While a clean kitchen is important to most of us, wiping down visible surfaces and keeping pantry shelves and cabinets organized tends to be the biggest priority.

Fortunately, manufacturers like Sub-ZeroGE and Whirlpool understand that the average consumer doesn’t spend a ton of time paying attention to this key kitchen appliance, and they have proactively researched ways to tackle the messy, unorganized refrigerator problem that many of us face.

In addition to supplying educational information that tells consumers how they should store food, top brands are also introducing innovative features that are designed to combat germs, purify air and make it easier for consumers to see the items that are in their refrigerators.

In May 2010, GE will introduce new models with 10 lighting sources rather than the standard three so that food is easier to spot. According to this article, the company hopes that the added lighting sources will make food more visible to consumers and therefore prevent items from spoiling due to the fact that they have been hidden in dark corners and forgotten.

Later this year, Whirlpool will introduce new refrigerators with shelves that have a microscopic etching and are 25% larger than those on existing models. The etching is designed to create surface tension, causing spilled liquids to bubble up around the perimeter of the container rather than spill over.

With new innovations like these, it will be interesting to see how consumers’ relationships with their refrigerators changes, if at all. As far as GE, Sub-Zero and Whirlpool are concerned, they certainly hope that we all pay better attention to the way we store items and how frequently we clean these appliances.

It’s a “Brand-New” 2009 Holiday Season

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Halloween is over, Thanksgiving is upon us, and the holiday spirit has made its way to retailers once again. Frantic shoppers everywhere are on the hunt for the perfect gift and the holiday buzz is all over the news, from magazines to newspapers, to television advertisements and online. No matter where you look, consumers are bombarded with the “best,” and “all-new,” products of the year. The seemingly familiar trend among companies is the “Quarter Four,” product launch which takes full advantage of the biggest shopping season of the year to promote their anticipated best sellers.

This year some of the top brands in the home and building category introduced some really innovative and practical products that mirror a traditional version with an exciting new twist.

For example, one of IMRE’s very own clients, Black & Decker, announced a series of new product launches last month that suit the practical gift-giver’s desire. One of the fun favorites among our staff is the Flex Cordless Mini Canister Vac, a step up from the traditional DustBuster. The product was launched in October 2009, and has received phenomenal reviews both internally and in the news. PeoplePets columnist, Lindsay Tyler stated, “The Flex is perfect for a pet owner — especially one with cats.” The Flex has a pet hair-cleaning accessory and 4-foot extending hose unlike other traditional models that makes creates added versatility.

Additionally, in October, Dyson introduced an all-new bladeless fan that expels 119 gallons of smooth and uninterrupted air every second. The first of its kind, this new bladeless technology distributes the air in a smooth motion that avoids the traditional choppy airflow that has existed for over 125 years.

Lastly, GE is currently promoting its all-new microwave grilling oven on its website. The model has dual functions to heat and grill traditional dishes. Just in time for the holidays, GE offers this new product that could be a perfect solution for a joint holiday gift for the family to share.

Home Intel Editors Share Our Favorite Magazines, Blogs, Websites and TV Shows

At Home Intel headquarters, our GoogleReaders and RSS feeds are always busting at the seams with new posts and updates from our favorite blogs and websites.  There are so many great information sources available for home and green design, we find our lists growing everyday.

We think a good resource should provide a variety of information on different topics - whether it’s the newest trends, appliances and product overviews, DIY project ideas or just some beautiful, inspiring photos.

Here’s a quick core sample of some of our favorite resources.

Magazines:  We know a magazine is great when it makes us read it like a book - cover to cover.  We are just thankful these publications have websites we can check for updates between issues.

Blogs:  What makes a design blog great? At Home Intel, we look for blogs with bite-sized posts that provide the right photos, links and lists.  These give us quick but powerful hits of inspiration that we couldn’t mark “read later” if we tried.

Websites: Our favorite websites have organized layouts.  These sites have enough content to keep us lost for days, but we love them because they are so easy to navigate.

TV:  We tried to narrow it down, but it’s just impossible.  We love everything about HGTV and Planet Green.

What are your favorite resources?  Let us know if you think there’s something we’ve missed!

Larger Fixtures, Energy Efficient Options and Pretty Pendants Top 2009 Lighting Trends

Monday, May 11th, 2009

With so many lighting options today - chandeliers, lamps, recessed cans, pendants and more - decorative lighting is probably one of the most important accessories a homeowner can buy. We should know too since several of the Home Intel editors are remodeling and in the process of shopping for new lighting fixtures to compliment their updated spaces.

Following are three decorative lighting trends we’ve seen in stores and homes over the past few months:

  1. Larger Fixtures - You might be amazed at the size of lighting fixtures today, especially for dining room and foyer/entryway chandeliers. In every store we have visited we noticed an extensive selection of large fixtures like chandeliers. According to HGTV this may be because the average size of the American home has increased over the past few years, which has led manufacturers to create larger home decor accessories and lighting options to better fit the spaces they are designed to fill. People with bigger homes need larger decorative lighting fixtures to fill the space and handle today’s more energy efficient bulb options.
  2. Energy Efficiency - It’s no surprise to see that the interest in energy efficient options is continuing to rise. More and more consumers are looking for efficient options to save both energy and money. Low-voltage bulbs and related lighting fixtures continue to grow in popularity and use, as CFLs and light-emitting diodes (LEDs) offer a higher quality, warmer light than just a short time ago.
  3. Pretty Pendants -  Every store we’ve visited had a surprisingly large selection of pendant lighting. These options are being used over open kitchen counters, breakfast tables, and islands. One store owner told us pendants are extremely hot sellers today. In fact, in addition to seeing these at every store we shopped, we’ve seen these in a number of open houses lately, especially in the more modern, higher-end homes.  “Fixtures like mini pendants are being added as decorative accents and they frequently match or at least compliment the chandelier in the dining room, particularly if the rooms are close together,” says Jeffrey Dross, trends analyst for Kichler Lighting in Cleveland, Ohio

According to the American Lighting Association, it is important to remember that there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to selecting fixture styles. Today, it is considered perfectly acceptable to mix and match opposing styles to create an interesting and surprising complementary look.
